Southwest Going International ?
Building an international presence is a significant shift for Southwest, which flew to success by focusing on reliable, low-fare service within the U.S. And it's another sign that the one-time niche carrier is increasingly competing on the same turf as the big network airlines, the so-called legacy carriers, such as United, Delta and American.
"Flying into more congested markets, now trying to go overseas … it seems like they're becoming a legacy carrier," says Basili Alukos, an airline analyst at Morningstar. But, he adds, if Southwest can replicate its domestic network and success internationally, "I think there's a lot of opportunity there."
domestic network and success internationally, "I think there's a lot of opportunity there."
Having a footprint beyond the U.S. was a key reason Southwest decided to buy AirTran, says Bob Jordan, Southwest's executive vice president and chief commercial officer.
"We have always wanted to get to a point where we added international capabilities," said Jordan, adding that AirTran's staff, aircraft, and perch at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International, the world's busiest airport, also figured into the decision to merge.
Combined with AirTran,. Southwest has roughly 25% of the U.S. market in terms of passenger traffic, Jordan says. While there is still room to grow domestically, he says, "You do get to a point where the next best set of destinations becomes international."
For now, Southwest's international flights are still operated by AirTran, which flies more than 20 a day and plans to add more. Service between San Antonio and Mexico City will start Thursday, while flights from Orange County to Mexico City and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, will launch on June 3.
Eventually, however, those flights will be under Southwest's banner. And Jordan says passengers heading to foreign destinations will have access to low ticket prices that Southwest is known for domestically.
"We've looked at the fares, and in every single case, using our typical Southwest structure, Southwest will be able to lower fares on the routes we're considering," he says.
Southwest recently announced it was deferring delivery of 30 Boeing 737-800 jets to cut costs roughly $1 billion over two years and strengthen its cash flow amid uncertain economic times and volatile fuel prices. But, it says, the move won't affect its plans to fly internationally.
Jordan says low prices, a strong record for on-time flights, and a good staff have fueled Southwest's popularity, and those hallmarks will stay in place as it stretches abroad.
"None of that changes with international service," he says. "Our service, our frequencies, our low fares, all of that comes with it. And that's what makes us different from the (large network carriers), not whether we do or don't fly internationally. I have no doubt we'll be successful."
New terminal plans
Southwest reached an agreement last month for a new reservations system that can handle international bookings, technology it previously lacked.
The airline also is seeking approval from Houston's city council to build a five-gate international terminal at Hobby Airport, whose private flights are the only ones that go to foreign destinations. The city's mayor, Annise Parker, announced her support for the terminal on Wednesday. Federal aviation officials will also have to give their OK.
Southwest would like to open the terminal, which would cost $100 million to $125 million, by 2015. It envisions it as the launching point for flights into Central and South America in addition to Mexico and the Caribbean.
A report commissioned by the Houston Airport System determined that the new portal would bring in an extra 1.5 million passengers annually, lead to 10,000 jobs for the Houston area, and amount to an economic benefit of $1.6 billion a year.
"The report projects that opening Hobby to international service would create a more competitive landscape" and lower fares, Houston Airport System's aviation director Mario Diaz wrote in a memo to Mayor Parker that supports the new terminal .
Plans were for the council to take up the matter by the end of May, said mayoral spokeswoman Janice Evans.
United, the biggest of the network carriers and which counts Houston's larger Bush Intercontinental Airport as its biggest hub, is not on board with Southwest's plan to turn Hobby into its international launch pad.
United flies the majority of passengers headed to foreign destinations from Houston. And it says its own study found that the proposed terminal at Hobby would result in the area taking an economic hit.
"Dividing the air service between the two airports … will mean that Houston is competing with itself for international connecting traffic rather than competing with very successful cities that have one international airport, like Atlanta and Dallas," says United spokeswoman Mary Clark. "We believe it will result in a loss of jobs and also there will be an economic loss for the city of Houston."
Clark says there is room for Southwest at Bush Intercontinental.
Southwest's Jordan counters that United is concerned about itself rather than the community.
"United Airlines doesn't want the competition," he says. "We're asking to bring more flights, and lower fares for the people of Houston, and bring in the economic benefits that come from that."
The Southwest effect
Southwest's impact on the markets it enters led to the coining of the term "the Southwest effect" in the airline industry. It refers to how its low ticket prices would spur competitors to lower their fares, too.
But nowadays Southwest fares are not necessarily the cheapest.
Spirit, Frontier and Allegiant are considered the truer low-cost carriers, industry watchers say. And in some markets, airlines such as American or US Airways have been found to offer a better price, says Henry Harteveldt, an airline and travel industry analyst.
Additionally, Southwest's growing foothold in larger, more congested markets could jeopardize the on-time performance that it's known for, says Akulos, the Morningstar analyst.
Yet, Southwest still stands apart from its peers, experts say. Unlike the network carriers, it continues to let passengers check two bags for free. And while travelers flying Spirit or Allegiant have to pay for everything from booking a ticket online to an on-board snack, Southwest still offers the services at no cost.
"Southwest won't be as inexpensive as Spirit or Allegiant on a ticket price alone," Harteveldt says. "But when you factor in what Southwest includes … Southwest still provides good value."
That value may be ultimately enhanced by service to far-flung destinations, he says.
"The critical thing in terms of making sure this is a smart move will be the cities that Southwest is serving … the number of flights they operate between those cities and the prices they charge," Harteveldt says. "But I think this is a logical and understandable part of Southwest's evolution as an airline."By Charisse Jones, usa today

Easter Island statues have full bodies and contain petroglyphs
Explorers have long known there was more to the 887 statues on Easter Island—some 2,000 miles west of Chile—than just the statue heads made famous in photographs.
When most people think of the renowned monolithic statues, they think of the heads only. But in October 2011, the Easter Island Statue Project began its Season V expedition, revealing remarkable photos showing that the bodies of the statues go far deeper underground than just about anyone had imagined.
The Thinkbox blog brought the excavation photos to attention today and has sparked some debate online as to whether the evidence of full-bodied statues on Easter Island is really "news." While technically full-bodied statues have been known to exist on Easter Island for hundreds of years, some of the new petroglyph writings on the recently excavated statues appear fairly unique.
As the project's director Jo Anne Van Tilburg, Ph.D, writes:
"While many statues have individual petroglyphs, these and only one other statue—of over 1,000 we have documented—have multiple petroglyphs carved as a composition on their backs. Underlying these carvings is a complex symbol found on less than 100 statues. It is referred to by previous researchers as the "ring and girdle" design, and sometimes said to represent the "sun and rainbow."

Dr. Van Tilburg also says the excavation sites offer some new "strong evidence" of how the Rapa Nui ancestors managed to manipulate the heavy statues into place with limited technological resources.
In addition, Dr. Van Tilburg wrote that her team has found tuna vertebrae near the bottom of a recent excavation. The evidence backs up claims from Easter Island's Rapa Nui community that the original statue carvers were rewarded for their efforts in meals of tuna and lobster.
While it used to be a fun theory to speculate whether the Easter Island statues were a product of some alien civilization, the new scientific evidence just goes to show that real history is far more grounded in reality—but no less startling.by eric pfeiffer

Stonehenge
Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire, about 2.0 miles (3.2 km) west of Amesbury and 8 miles (13 km) north of Salisbury. One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is composed of a circular setting of large standing stones set within earthworks. It is at the centre of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds.
Archaeologists believe the iconic stone monument was constructed anywhere from 3000 BC to 2000 BC, as described in the chronology below. Radiocarbon dating in 2008 suggested that the first stones were erected in 2400–2200 BC, whilst another theory suggests that bluestones may have been erected at the site as early as 3000 BC
The surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC. The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 in a co-listing with Avebury Henge monument. It is a national legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument. Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage, while the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust.
Archaeological evidence found by the Stonehenge Riverside Project in 2008 indicates that Stonehenge could possibly have served as a burial ground from its earliest beginnings. The dating of cremated remains found on the site indicate that deposits contain human bone material from as early as 3000 BC, when the initial ditch and bank were first dug. Such deposits continued at Stonehenge for at least another 500 years.

Tulum Mexico
Tulum is on the Yucatan Peninsula, in Mexico. It is one of the earliest resorts in Mexico, offering a place of worship and solitude for the Mayan Kings, clergy and Gods in early times. The tropical beach backdrop is the main attraction of this picturesque, much-visited small ruin on the shore of the Caribbean Sea. Shortly after your arrival, you will understand why early Mayans picked this beautiful place to relax.
Be prepared for LOTS of people and tour groups at the archaeological site. To avoid the crowds, it is best to stay overnight and visit the ruins early in the morning before the buses arrive, or later in the afternoon. Morning is recommended since you can catch spectacular vistas when the sun is rising over the Caribbean.
Rental cars are priced reasonably and are the easiest way to get around the entire area that surrounds Tulum.
There is also a direct shuttle starting at 24 USD per person called Tucan-Kin. It is a door to door service with no stops between the airport and the Tulum Area. A reservation is required.
Many of the Hotels in Tulum offer a pick-up service from Cancun Intl for an addition 99 or 120 USD.
You can also take a Taxi from the Airport which will run about the same as the Hotel shuttle service for 145.
Buses from Playa Del Carmen run hourly or so. Bus station is at southern end of Fifth Avenue near Playacar. ADO Bus stops at Xcaret and Xel-ha enroute to Tulum. Mayab bus stops more frequently enroute to Tulum from Playa Del Carmen.
To visit the ruins, get off the bus at the first Tulum stop at the intersection with the access road to the ruins. It's an easy one mile or so flat walk to the ruins from the intersection.
An alternative to the buses is to catch a "collectivo" van. In Playa Del Carmen you can find these on Calle 2 towards Avenida 20. One-way trip costs 35 pesos.
Tulum Pueblo sits split by highway 307 running South-North. "El Pueblo", as referred to by locals, is home to most workers of the tourist industry and where many of the stores, supermarkets, two bus stations, inns, hostels and small hotels are found. This section of town has a definite feel of existing mostly to cater to the Tulum ruins. Tulum pueblo is indeed a destination for shopping, great restaurants, a modest night life, studying the language at Instituto Chac-Mool Spanish School, booking tours, banking, shopping for food, local vegetables, fruits, cafes, and local flavor. Do not miss it.
Tulum Playa nests along the coastline that leads into the Sian Ka'an Biosphere [Ecological Reserve], the Caribbean white sandy beaches to the east, an impressive mangrove & wetland reserve to the south. Tulum Playa embraces many of the fancier, ecological, boutique and spa hotels, and it has a decent to excellent selection of restaurants and night spots. There are also a number of affordable beach front cabana-type lodging locations. Walk the beach and simply step in and inquire about accommodations and rates. You will be surprised and delighted.
It should be noted most of these establishments are Eco-friendly and do not provide electricity past midnight. Toilet paper can not be flushed and it is asked that water and other resources be used sparingly. The hotels in Tulum aim to keep Tulum as it is and stop the ecological problems that have already taken hold in Cancun and Playa Del Carmen.
If you are staying on the beach and trying to save money, it is wise to stock up on food and drinks in the pueblo. There are not too many restaurant options on the beach, and the ones that are operational are comparatively quite expensive.
Taxis have a near monopoly on transport to and from the playa. Buses come from time to time, but hitchhiking can also get you where you need to go.
Tulum Ruinas is the archaeological site where the Maya ruins of Tulum stand. It is conformed by a-mile-long road leading into the ruins from highway 307. The road is flanked by several restaurants, a commercial area geared to one-day visitors, a huge parking lot, a small bus station that operates part-time and a handful of middle range hotels.
A standard to telephoto zoom lens does well if you must photograph during times of peak tourism. This strategy will keep people out of your shots of the ruins. Tripods are allowed only with a permit that is exclusively available in Mexico City for a $500 fee. A monopod may be a possibility.

To avoid the crowds, it is best to stay overnight and visit the ruins early in the morning before the buses arrive, or later in the afternoon. From Cancun International Airport
During the daylight hours you can catch a bus regularly to Tulum, probably on the hour or so. The ride will take about 2 hours.Rental cars are priced reasonably and are the easiest way to get around the entire area that surrounds Tulum.
There is also a direct shuttle starting at 24 USD per person called Tucan-Kin. It is a door to door service with no stops between the airport and the Tulum Area. A reservation is required.

By car
If you drive yourself to the ruins before opening time, it may be a bit confusing as to where to go and what to do. As soon as you park, a man on a bicycle should find you and charge you for parking (50 pesos). You must go through a sort of half open-air mall (which is empty before 8AM). From there you can either sign up with a tour guide (US$20 per person?), pay for a shuttle ride to the ruins (20 pesos), or walk a mile along a road to the ruins. The guides are reported to be better story tellers than actual experts on Mayan culture. The walk is on level ground and passes quickly as you admire the jungle and abandoned shops along the way. If you can walk it, do it and save a few bucks! As you approach a stone wall, to the left will be a brown wooden building where you can purchase your ticket into the ruins (51 pesos, an additional 35 pesos if they see that you have a video camera). From there, head along a stone path through the jungle and into the ruins...Three Tulums
What most folks really need to know, and only manage to figure out once there, is the fact that there are really three different areas all referred to as TULUM only minutes away from each other, not close enough though to walk to and from.Tulum Pueblo sits split by highway 307 running South-North. "El Pueblo", as referred to by locals, is home to most workers of the tourist industry and where many of the stores, supermarkets, two bus stations, inns, hostels and small hotels are found. The road is flanked by several restaurants, a commercial area geared to one-day visitors, a huge parking lot, a small bus station that operates part-time and a handful of middle range hotels.
Tulum is mostly known for its ruins, which strike an impressive image next to the sea, but were constructed during a time period of Maya culture that was waning. The site is notable for a small cenote (albeit dry during Jan 2009), beautiful beach below the ruin laden cliffs and some well preserved stellae in only one of its structures. After visiting other ruins in the area such as Coba, Chichen Itza and Ek Balam, Tulum's main claim is the sea-side setting. It is best visited on a clear, bright day or at sunrise. Bring your swimming suit. At the time of writing, one of the best sections was closed to visitors and covered with plastic bottles and other refuse.

Jamaica / Ocho Rios Attractions / Dunn's River Falls
Up for a day trip? The adventurous visitor will want to check out this majestic waterfall, known as the Niagara of Jamaica. Scale the 600-foot limestone rock formation as water cascades past you and splashes into the ocean below. Guides lead groups carefully, with group members linking hands for the steep ascent. Small pools of water and excellent photo opportunities will greet you along the way. Afterwards, relax at the beach restaurant or browse through the artisan market.
Bob Marley Museum Must See!
For many, Jamaica means reggae, and reggae means Bob Marley. If this sounds like you, a visit to Kingston definitely means a visit to the reggae superstar’s former home and studio. The creaky wooden house on Hope Rd where Marley once lived and recorded is the city’s most-visited site. Today the house functions as a tourist attraction, museum and shrine, but much remains as it was during Marley’s day. The house is guarded by a sentry of faithful Rasta brethren and sisters and shielded by a vibrantly painted wall festooned with Rastafarian murals. Dominating the forecourt is a gaily colored statue of the musical legend. Some of the guides are overly solemn (focusing with eerie earnestness on the room where Marley survived assassination), but the hour-long tour provides fascinating insights into the life he led after moving uptown. His gold and platinum records ( Exodus, 1977; Uprising, 1980; and Legend, 1984) are there on the walls, alongside Rastafarian religious cloaks, Marley’s favorite denim stage shirt and the Order of Merit presented by the Jamaican government. One room upstairs is decorated with media clippings about the superstar. Another contains a replica of Marley’s original record shop, Wail’n Soul’m. Perhaps most powerfully, Marley’s simple bedroom has been left as it was, with his star-shaped guitar by the bedside. The former recording studio out back is now an exhibition hall and theater, where the tour closes with a fascinating film of his final days. A recently upgraded shopping court offers ‘official’ Marley products including Bob’s Honey, produced by a hive of bees that’s been buzzing on the site since the musician adopted them in the mid-1970s. No cameras or tape recorders are permitted inside
